2025 Australian Superkart Championship
Seventy-three entrants from across Australia and New Zealand made their way to Shell V Power Motorsport park (the Bend) over the Kings birthday weekend.
Along with "some locals say,” the freezing conditions and rain. Unfortunately, the weather slowed the karts considerably, hampered many with water ingestion, and tested the resolve of all to stay on the track.
Defending 250cc International Champion Ilya Harpas (S.A.) was on fire early on, but was sidelined with mechanical issues giving Nick Schembri (Vic) a comfortable win and the GP for the weekend.
In 250cc National Nick Vella (S.A.) made a comfortable clean sweep from all four races to secure his number one plate.
125cc Gearbox Open was an international affair with Victorian Tim Clarke fighting for the bragging rights over New Zealander Tyler Edney. Clarke handed a field a driving lesson in the wet conditions leaving the field in his wake in all four heats. He also went on to top the weekend off by winning the GP trophy as well.
Rotax non gearbox was contested over three weight categories and provided the meeting with its biggest entry list of 31 karts.
Racing in this control class is always close and exciting to watch.
In the Lights it was Harry Georgio (S.A.), Russ Occhipinti (Vic) and New Zealander Chris Benton who would fight for the spoils with local Georgio claiming the victory.
Non gearbox heavy saw last year's winners go head-to-head. Colin McIntyre (Vic) stayed focussed keeping his eye on the number one plate, while last year's champ Jonathon Twigden (S.A) missed out thanks to a DNF in heat one. Twigden got one back on Mcintyre winning the GP plate in the 5th race.
The entire field of heavies put in a stellar performance and the result came down to the last lap of the final.
Non-Gearbox Super Heavy was a Victorian affair and it was a clean sweep for Cameron Austen, from qualifying to the final giving him his first Championship ahead of Rod Clarke and Joe Brancati. Commiserations to Jeremy Crust who was right on the game early on but had an unfortunate coming together with a heavy competitor in race three ending his weekend.
The event also contested the Australian Superkart GP as a fifth race on the Sunday. The GP has been run by the Adelaide Superkart Club since 1964 and has many of the sport legends names engraved on the trophies.
Australian Superkart Events would like to thank the AASA, the staff of The Bend, Sponsors- Supagas, OZ Design Nunawading, Slipstream signs and Dunlop Kartsport for the valuable support, and last but not least the entrants from across Australia and New Zealand for great racing and sportsmanship in very trying conditions and cementing the event the largest Superkart event in Australia.
