Huge cash prize up for grabs in inaugural AASA ‘Legends’ Short Track Nationals in Sydney
More than $40,000 in cash and prizes will be up for grabs in AASA’s inaugural Legends Short Track Nationals under lights at Sydney Motorsport Park on April 25-26.
The pint-sized and ever-exciting Legend Cars Australia category will be the event's stars, with a grid of 40+ pocket rockets tipped to compete, all aiming to be crowned the 2026 Legends Short Track Nationals champion.
If being a national champion is not enough incentive, the significant cash prizes might be. The event's feature race will be a winner-takes-all battle, with a cool $10,000 awarded to the first across the line.
The two-day event will run under lights on both Saturday and Sunday evening.
The Short track-focused series will utilise Sydney Motorsport Park's ‘Druitt' layout where the car's use the 'flip flop' that connects Turn 4 and 8 of the venue's 'Gardner' layout.
This event will mark the first time the 2.8km bullring variant of the Sydney venue hosts a major AASA National motorsport event.
Five top-line racing categories will feature in the short, sharp one-and-a-half-day event, showcasing budget-friendly AASA categories and allowing regular racers the chance to compete against some of Australia's hottest driving talent.
Alongside the Legends will be the 2026 Yokohama Australian Formula Ford Championship, Formula RX8, Stockcars and AASA Tin Tops.
The Legends Cars Australia category is aiming for a huge grid of 40 + cars or more, all vying to claim the big cash prize.
Several high-profile drivers from various motorsport disciplines will compete in the Legends Nationals, and a significant broadcasting arrangement is in place to showcase the spectacle to the masses. More details will be announced in due course.
Prizes for the Legends race include a free TFH Racing factory supported Aussie Racing Car drive for the highest-placed series regular (valued at over $20,000), and the overall winner will claim $10,000 cash. An additional $10,000 in cash and prizes will be distributed among the top 15 finishers of the feature event.
The overall winner will be awarded the AASA Legends Short Track National Champion title and can choose to run the #1 for the remainder of the Legends AASA 2026 season.
The Legends Short Track Nationals will use a format reminiscent of Sprintcar events to decide the winner, with the AASA Legends Short Track National Champion decided in the A-Main final.

"The AASA Nationals Series was created to showcase grassroots racing, lower the cost for competitors and make racing more meaningful," said Ambrose.
"The Legends Short Track Nationals does just that. The Legends category was chosen for our first Nationals event because it always provides great racing for competitors and spectators, whether at the track or watching on TV.
"The Legends also has the biggest fields and is the most affordable to run, making the cash prizes even more valuable.
"The AASA focuses on grassroots racing, and that is exactly what the Legends series is. All the teams are run as privateer and family entries, and they race on budgets.
"The Legends Nationals will allow these competitors to showcase their skills against some of Australia’s hottest drivers in the country and compete for the biggest prizes ever offered – all with a major broadcast partner to watch it on.
"We have some really exciting announcements to make about this event soon, but if you rate yourself as a driver, don’t wait, go find a Legends car to race and come and win the cash.
"The event is coming together really well ... I’m thinking I should dust off my old helmet and have a go too!"
