Shannons Drift Matsuri Draws 8,000 Spectators to Queensland Raceway

Queensland Raceway’s 2026 Shannons Spring Drift Matsuri sanctioned by AASA delivered one of the biggest drift weekends of the year, attracting 8,000 spectators and around 250 drivers across three days of drifting, entertainment and car culture.

Held from 2–4 October, the event was built around participation rather than competition, giving drivers extensive track time across multiple layouts while spectators enjoyed a packed program on and off the circuit.

This year’s Matsuri was bigger than ever, with international drift stars Matt Field, Branden Sorensen and Hert making the trip from the United States to take part in the weekend.

One of the major highlights was a first for the event, with drift cars carrying fireworks as part of a spectacular $35,000 fireworks show. The program also included burnout demonstrations, Legends Lane passenger experiences, the Drift Bus and free kids activities.

Queensland Raceway also welcomed the Australian Defence Force, with a Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle and associated equipment on display throughout the weekend.

More Than Just Drifting

The event also featured two major prize giveaways.

Tony Quinn’s personal drift car “Popeye”, valued at around $100,000, was one of the headline prizes, alongside a Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 valued at approximately $150,000 thanks to Queensland Raceway’s partnership with Llewellyn Motors.

The Silverado giveaway had been 12 months in the making, with Hamish ultimately taking home the vehicle following the weekend.

Burnout fans were also catered for, with four high-powered cars taking over the main straight for a demonstration featuring 2 Cranky, Hanful and I’ll Play, adding another layer of entertainment to an already packed schedule.

A Celebration of Drift Culture

At its heart, Drift Matsuri remains about getting people on track.

With around 250 drivers participating, the weekend brought together experienced drifters, grassroots competitors, friends, families and spectators for three days built around track time, social connection and the culture surrounding drifting.

The strong turnout of 8,000 spectators underlined the growing appeal of drift events that combine participation with entertainment and broader car culture.

AASA was proud to sanction the 2026 Shannons Spring Drift Matsuri and support another major grassroots motorsport weekend at Queensland Raceway.
