Marcos Ambrose joins the AASA in new major role

The Australian Auto-Sport Alliance (AASA) has announced two-time Supercars champion and well-known motorsport identity Marcos Ambrose as its National Competition and Commercial Director.

The role has been newly developed in consultation with Ambrose and the AASA and is in with immediate effect.

Ambrose has been appointed into the position to expand and enhance national level motorsport for the AASA, particularly the Hi-Tec Oils Super Series which heads into its fourth season in 2026.

The AASA prides itself on the fact that it has been built by racers for racers with the governing body running by its slogan of ‘pure racing,’ - it is focused on delivering the best possible racing environment for motorsport competitors.

“My role is to support the transition of AASA from a grass roots racing/heritage type product into a professional, dynamic, trusted and proven alternative for National level motorsport in Australia,” Ambrose explained.

“AASA is fully committed to making racing more affordable, more rewarding and more meaningful for both local racers and National stars.

“Our competitors and officials make a massive effort and commitment to go racing and we want to ensure we reward that.

“We joke at AASA that we are here to put the ‘Race’ back in racing or the ‘Sport’ back in motorsport. But really, it’s not a joke at all – that’s our mission.”

Ambrose has been entrenched in motorsport for decades, first as a successful driver both nationally in Supercars and also internationally working his way up to the pinnacle of NASCAR competition in America.

Since moving back to Australia, Ambrose has moved into team management by first joining Garry Rogers Motorsport as the squad’s competition director.

In more recent times Ambrose has launched his successful Marcos Ambrose Motorsport operation, running entries in Formula Ford, TA2 and Trans Am.

Alongside Jeff Grech, Ambrose has also been instrumental in the inaugural running of the Formula Ford Stars and Renegades Series.

“My background serves me well to support AASA in delivering the best possible racing product for competitors and fans,” said Ambrose.

“I have been a fan, competitor, team owner and grumpy dad in my 38 years of racing. I hope to put that to good work and help the next generation of drivers fulfill their dreams in motorsports.”

The two-time NASCAR Cup Series race winner has big plans in motion and is already acting upon some changes.

“My first order of business is to remove all time-certain racing at AASA and go back to racing laps. That will be a good start,” he said.

“We are also looking at all parts of the race weekend experience to find ways to provide more laps, more track time and more ‘pure racing’ on the track.

“We have exciting plans and announcements to make over the coming weeks in regards to the Hi-Tec Oils Super Series – Season 4 2026, as well as other initiatives in the pipeline.”

Ambrose joins a strong team at the heart of the AASA and Hi-Tec Oils Super Series.

The team includes experienced AASA CEO Stephen Whyte, Hi-Tec Oils Super Series Manager Carolyn Oldano and former Holden Racing Team Manager Jeff Grech, who last year took on the role of Super Series Technical Director.

“AASA already has a great team of dedicated people delivering strong results,” said Ambrose.

“I hope to compliment them and support AASA’s continued growth which will ultimately benefit Australian racers.”

AASA CEO Stephen Whyte welcomed Ambrose to the AASA team and explained that his CV makes him the right man for the job.

“Marcos and I have been talking for some time and it’s quite clear he has a focus on the competitor and the future of motorsport in this country,” said Whyte said.

“He wants to make a difference, his clear pedigree aside, he knows what it takes to go racing at any level.

“Marcos’ willingness to join us at AASA vindicates the foundations we have built, but now we are ready to go to the next level, and we need the right people and assets to do that.

“Clearly, like his racing achievements, he puts 100% effort into his craft and already we’ve seen that with his early involvement at AASA.

“He is matter-a-fact, has a solid business brain and wants to win. Ultimately, the winners will be our partners, customers and the fans.”

The final round of the 2025 Hi-Tec Oils Super Series takes place this weekend at Winton Motor Raceway, find out more info here.
