Thunder this weekend at Calder
Round 3 of the Victorian Motor Racing Championships (VMRC) takes place this weekend, June 14-15 at Calder Park Raceway just North of Melbourne and is free of charge to attend.
The race weekend features a hand full of categories mainly of state-based level, but there is also a national championship.
Once again, the incredibly popular Australian Drivers Championship join the VMRC program for its fifth round of the season, the categories round at Calder comes hot off the back of their appearance on the national Hi-Tec Oils Super Series bill.
In that event Sydneysider Hayden Crossland clean swept the round taking four wins across the weekend, this enabled him to close a small margin to series leader Damon Sterling.
All the other regular front runners are competing including former champion Dean Crooke, Masters champion Hamish Leighton and Niko French.
Around 20 cars will be competing at Calder in the Australian Drivers’ Championship, in the series all drivers run identical Aussie built Hyper Racer X1 machines which like Formula 1 cars produce their downforce using ground effects.
They aren’t the only category on show, there are some stacked national categories on the program.
One of which is Sports Compact, the series formerly known as 2L Sports Sedans has hit the ground running in 2025 with sizable grids at every event so far.
Calder will be no exception, nearly 20 cars have entered including some old veterans of the series and some new names as well.
As always James Harris will be one of the ones to beat in his Nissan Bluebird, however reigning champion Steve Howard will have something to say about that, he’s looking to rebound after a challenging start to the year in his Toyota Corolla KE 30.
As always, the front running ladies will be in attendance including Lauren Talbot and Sharon Stipkovic.
Other cars include Ford Escorts, Morris Coopers, Honda Civics, Renault Clios and so much more. This category is always one of the very best in terms of entertainment and I expect no different at Calder Park.
Vic Excels boast a field of around 20 cars also, it is a quality grid expect to see Williams Sala, Jake Burton and Ryan Phillips up the front of the field, but don’t be surprised if there is a surprise or two over the four races on Saturday and Sunday.
There are a lot of Excel newbies in amongst the field who are quickly learning their craft, look to see who the next potential up and comer is.
If you love your Aussie V8 muscle cars, Vic V8s is the category for you, with cars from the XB Falcon and VB Commodore through to the BA Falcon and VY Commodore and everything in between.
These cars have been tuned up well past the speed that they were capable of when they were brand new, the racing is always clean yet fierce and competitive.
The entry list contains many of the regulars in what looms like a very interesting round of Vic V8s.
Lastly Victorian Super TT, the state level category to the national Tin Tops category that is open to an incredible array of vehicles.
Mazda RX7s, Nissan Skylines, Falcons and Commodores they can all be raced in this series.
Although not an official VMRC practice day, Friday at Calder will be run by Drive Events, and you can take part in that event by clicking the link here and enter the race weekend by clicking here.
Tickets are not required for fans to attend as you can see all there categories contest four races free of charge, you also get free access to the pit and paddock area, so make sure to get yourself trackside at Calder this weekend!
